MY Theme Statement
My theme is transformation through surface and form. I made regular things into something else or more unique.
Final
For this years theme I decited to do my projects based on transformation through surface and form. My goal was to turn ordinary objects like bowls into something more unique to make it stick out from all the others. I made multiple projects that tied into my theme but only used a handful of them in my essay.
I chose 5 of my projects to represent my theme; my pitcher, sea cup, plate, a lollypop holder, and one of my mugs. In all these projects I worked hard to add extra elements like design in glaze, adding 3-D pieces or bending and shaping the projects themselves. These projects all took time and a steady hand to complete, but the whole time i throughly enjoyed adding every little detail to each and every project.
In my pitcher when i was throwing it I tried to make it taller but I didnt haveenough clay, I shaped it with more body than usual. I also added 3 leaves to the top of my pitcher transforming the project and adding texture, I then painted leaves inside and out of the pitcher to give it both leaved that stuck out and some that were just painted. For my sea mug I added flattened circles of clay to the outside of the mug going all the way around. I twisted the handle to make it stand out from all my other mugs. The last thing I added was the glaze which I dipped in shadow green and then in cobalt blue and then wiped some of the blue off giving it a ocean and seaweed look. It took forever to finish this mug but it was all worth it in the end. For my plates I made the edges taller and then ridged the edges to make them wavy all the way around. I then dipped the plates in cobalt blue and the wavy edges in shadow green. These plates are unique and I havent seen them anywhere else. I made my first porcelin bowl which wasnt great but i made it look different by glazing it in white and making little yellow porcelin fishies putting them on the bottom and then putting green and blue glass over the top to make the fish look like they were swimming in the lake.
I made my pitcher to fit my theme by using both pieces of my theme. I used the surface form by adding and painting leaves onto the pitcher, and I used the form by changing up the body of my project. For my sea cup I added the circles and different glazes to fit my theme not only did the circles add texture and individuality but the glazes made the mug stick out the most and it gave it a more rustic and ocean look to it. My ridged plates used form to support my theme by making the edges ridged, and the dipped edges in different colors added shadowing to the plates.
Throughout this semester I have struggled to find my theme. When I finally figured it out all of my random projects finally started coming together. I think that my goal to make ordinary projects unique worked out with every single one of my projects. This year has opened up my eyes to being more unique and open with my projects.

rough draft
For my theme I chose to do transformation through surface and form. My goal for this semester was to turn ordinary things into something else.
I chose 5 of my projects to represent my theme; my pitcher, my sea cup, plate, lollypop holder, and another one of my mugs. In all these projects I added extra elements like design in glaze, added 3-d pieces, or creating uniqueness in the objects them selves.
In my pitcher I added 3-d leaves on the handle, and painted leaves down the sides. I also made the footing wider than the base of the pitcher itself. With my sea cup I represented my theme by giving it a twisted handle, adding flattened balls with dots in the middle in a wave pattern going all the way around the mug, and last I glazed it with a dark blue and then wiping the glaze off random parts and then applying shadow green this created a textured look to the mug. For my plates I made the edges taller and gave a wavy look to them to make the plates more interesting. I glazed one with cobalt blue and dipped the edges in shadow green, and the other plate I glazed it green and then dipped the edgein black causing it to drip down onto the plate. For my lollypop holder I formed a closed bubble on the wheel and then drilled holes in it to hold the lollypops. I then glazed it dark blue and dripped black glaze over the top. For my last project I made a coffee mug with ridges doing up and down the sides, and then I added a tiny camera on the bottom of the mug.
I made all these projects to specifically tie
into my theme.
